I will Love you in Sickness and in Health
We all must have experienced an occasional cold or fever that hit us and put our entire life out of track. No one ever fell sick at a good and convenient time. Sickness usually disrupts our schedules, plans, finances and in short, our daily normal life. Our health is often one of the most important aspects that we take for granted until it fails us. No one ever accounted for illness and sickness while making plans for the future. We make plans assuming that we will keep good health and that everything will always be fine, may it be as small as booking a movie ticket or planning an elaborate holiday etc. Yet, what we all know from experience is that health can quickly go downhill if we do not take care of ourselves.
The Perpetual War
I recently attended a talk by a young dynamic priest who gave a very encouraging and challenging message. He informed the entire congregation that we are at war with the evil one, that the war had already begun and continues around us every day. He ended by asking us a very thought-provoking question: ARE YOU READY FOR WAR?
Not my kinda God!!!
I remember that dreadful evening, many years ago, when the girl I was madly in love with called me saying, "We need to talk." That phrase was enough to send a chill down my spine and to scare me for something terrible to come. I met her the next day and my worst fears came true. She called me to break up with me because I was not the kind of boyfriend she wanted. I was clearly not living up to the expectation she had set for me. I remember that phase of my life when my mobile had a break up playlist and crying came to me as easy as breathing. I could see her face everywhere, from advertising hoardings, to being able to see her face on my chapatti. I was completely shattered because I had not expected her to break up with me.
Sacrament: A moment of Encounter
I remember when I was going to receive the sacrament of confirmation. I was excited and thrilled. I was the youth version walking down the aisle, more like a preview to getting married. I remember the emphasis on what clothes to wear and how grand a party we will have after mass. It was an atmosphere of celebration and festivity, but largely limited to superficiality. As I reflect back, I feel that in this whole focus of inviting people for the party and deciding on what food I should serve, just to ensure that they do not gossip about how stingy we are, I missed out on a very important point – that I was going to encounter Jesus.
Behold, I bring Life Eternal!
Studying the Bible as the word of God
The main purpose of reading the word of God is namely, to have eternal life. In the Gospel according to St. John, Jesus, the eternal Word of the Father, says,
"I have come that they may have life and have it in abundance" (John 10:10).
St. Ignatius of Loyola says,
"Study in order to save souls."
Our main purpose of studying the bible is not to simply master it but to follow it closely and to serve it whole heartedly.
St. John Paul the Great – True Ambassador of Christ
We all need inspiration and we all need role models. Consciously or subconsciously we all have them. Some look at movie stars, others find them in sportsmen, while some others, among people we interact with. The Catholic Church has blessed us with ready role models, the Catholic Superstars who have lived their lives as a model for others to follow in the footsteps of Christ.
Doing v/s Being
Look younger in a week, fairer skin in just 10 days, grow taller and smarter sooner. These advertisements are often flashed every now and then where ever we go on television, hoardings on the streets or are flashed on websites that we surf. They all are telling us about how we can be better than what we already are.
I see this as a growing crisis of our times. We are just not happy with the way we are. If we are fat, we want to be thin. If we are thin, we want to be fat. The dark want to be fair and the fair want to get a tan. The tall wants to be a little shorter and the short wants to get taller etc. I will confess, even though I write this, I am a victim of this crisis myself.
Strategic Time Out
I was watching tennis on television one day and two of the best players in the world were fighting for the title. I remember it was a match worth watching; brilliant strokes, amazing serves and a great display of skill that made it difficult to predict a winner till the very end. Just when my favorite player was marching towards victory, the opponent asked for a time out. "WHAAAATTTT???? What nonsense is this? A time out at this point in the game?" These were the thoughts running through my mind.
When the match resumed, the opponent came back stronger, more focused and ultimately went on to defeat my favorite player. I remember sitting there angry and frustrated, not knowing what went wrong until I narrowed down my analysis to the time out. It was the 'TIME OUT' that ruined the game. But then again, think about the opponent. The 'time out' for him was a game changer. It is what won him the title.
